I recently read a book that has absolutely changed my life, and I think you will enjoy reading it too.
The book is called: The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness by Jeff Olsen.
It talks about how the results you get in life aren’t determined by chance, big actions you take, or big events that happen to you.
Success in a particular area of your life happens (or doesn’t happen) because of a small decision (good or bad) that’s repeated every day. That decision is so small, in fact, that it seems to make no difference whether you do it or not. But when that decision is repeated daily, it has a compounding effect that will inevitably lead to success or failure.
That was a powerful idea for me, because there were some things in my life that I wanted and needed to change. But no matter how hard I tried, I never seemed to be able to accomplish what I was trying to do.
What this book helped me to discover is that in order for my eventual success to be certain, all I needed to do is identify the one or two small disciplines that I needed to repeat everyday that would eventually bring me to my goal, and commit to them.
Doing this is like planting a seed: once you do your part, the rest of the process takes care of itself.
After reading the book a couple of months ago, my wife and I decided we’d try it out and see if it worked. We both wanted to lose some weight and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. So we each figured out the actions that we individually needed to take on a daily basis to get where we wanted to be.
I’m proud to say, after 2 months of discipline, I’m down about 12 pounds! (It would have been more, but I pulled a calf muscle really bad and could hardly walk for a couple of weeks. I’m back on track now, though.) My wife on the other hands has lost a whopping 22 pounds, and she’s still going strong. So the principles work!
What areas do you want to change in your life? Do you want to get back in shape and develop a healthy lifestyle? Do you want to develop a deeper and more meaningful relationship with your spouse or children? Do you want to change your current financial situation?
Figure out the small daily actions you need to take that will lead to your success, and commit to them. Your future self will thank you.
